Course Description

In just 3 x 20 minute sessions we aim to provide the tools for your AT ACTION PLAN.

An AT ACTION PLAN is a strategy to improve device reliability and to prevent problems.

If problems arise an AT ACTION PLAN will include problem-solving and solutions, so that panic and frustration is reduced.

At the heart of the AT ACTION PLAN is the ZYTEQ AT MAINTENANCE & MANAGEMENT GUIDE, and the sections here form the course modules.

This course provides the information and "how to..." steps to implement the Maintenance & Management strategy.

It will become your AT ACTION PLAN.

We can see an AT ACTION PLAN being useful for anyone with electronic assistive technology such as Speech Generating Devices or generic Windows computers with adapted access methods. The content is most relevant to support of tablet computer-based devices, and especially devices from Zyteq, but the principles should apply to a wider range of computer-based assistive technology.

To supplement the guide, you will receive the necessary checklists and workbooks towards creating an AT ACTION PLAN.

Why we created this course

Technology is everywhere but we still need people to 'drive' it and to take care of it.

If you have limited time, few resource people to help or don't feel sufficiently "tech savvy" it can be difficult to support the computer-based Assistive Technology, whether you are the person using it, or part of a team.

This can result in equipment "down time", frustration and panic!

As technology has become ubiquitous we find that the knowledge and/or time to assist with supporting the Assistive Technology has not always maintained pace. I won't lament that few people know DOS these days, because that's not really necessary these days, but batteries don't maintain themselves and as Windows versions keep changing someone in the team needs to understand what's new. We need to be continuing to learn if we want to use the latest tech and keep it running problem-free!

We find that many problems we encounter could have been prevented if there was a META-COMPETENCE in the technology. Preventing problems has to be better for everyone, but especially for the person using the device.

We created the AT Maintenance and Management Guide as our starting point, but realise that it would be helpful to dissect this and provide the practical steps towards implementation.

Who will find this course useful?

Anyone supporting computer-based Assistive Technology and those who support their own Assistive Technology should find this course useful. Apart from the primary AT user, this may include Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists family members, teachers, support workers, instructors and "tech buddies". The content is most relevant to Zyteq devices, however as Grid 3 is often used on other Windows devices and consumer computers it will be relevant to these also. Communication devices and Windows tablet computers, laptops and desktops with specialised access methods and software are likely to be the most relevant. If you are unsure if it is relevant please contact us and let us know what device or system you have.

Please feel free to refer others you know or work with who may benefit.

What is the expected outcome?

The ultimate outcome is to provide the tools for you to implement at AT ACTION PLAN for the Assistive Technology you support.

This will provide a strategy for:

  • understanding the device more fully
  • how to maintain and manage the device to prevent problems and improve reliability
  • how to approach problems

Speech Pathologist / Assistive Technology Consultant ; Service Manager

Tracey Bode & Emma Hughes

TRACEY: As a Speech Pathologist specialising in computer-based technology for Alternative & Augmentative Communication (AAC) for more than 30 years what I have learned is that its all about the people. The people using and supporting the Assistive Technology make it happen! Through our online courses, we aim to provide the tools needed so that the people and technology can work harmoniously together. Only then the technology can more successfully serve those who use it.EMMA: At Zyteq Emma has become sought after for her ability to assist customers to problem-solve and patiently step through solutions. She integrates her "inner nerd", technical expertise and device knowledge to generously share and pass on her "tips and tricks". Emma is the Service Manager at Zyteq and has technician qualifications at degree level. She has worked for more than 8 years as a technician and in providing technical assistance and training to customers. In her spare time she gets up to lots of geeky stuff.
